Nathaniel Gordon Was A Successful Slave Trader - 926 Words

Imagine being taken from your home, forced to board an overly crowded ship, not knowing the destination or what is the future entails for you. This was the case, for countless Africans that endured horrible treatment, as they were ultimately sold into slavery throughout the United States. In 1807, the United States Congress, passed new legislation that made it illegal to import slaves (Finkelman, 2008). This law became effective in 1808, still most people did not believe that importing slaves was considered unlawful. Including a man named Nathaniel Gordon, who was a successful slave trader, that believed himself to be untouchable by the law put forth. He was the mastermind behind taking African slaves against their will, which began their journey of enslavement in the United States. He was eventually captured, put to trial, and ultimately hung for his wrong doings. Nathaniel Gordon was used as an example, for all others that believed they were above the law, and that capturing people with the intent to sell them into slavery would no longer be considered a tolerable act in the United States. Born about 1834 in Portland, Maine, Nathaniel Gordon was deeply engaged as a slave trader (Gordon, 2008). Gordon was the captain of ship Erie that was finally revealed â€Å". . .by the United States steamer Mohican, on the morning of the 8th day of August, 1860; that she was then about fifty miles outside the River Congo, on the West Coast of Africa. . .† (Punishment of a Slave

Do You Think That the Right to Life Entails a Right to Die...

I am going to answer these two questions in this essay. They are â€Å"Do you think that the right to life entails a right to die under certain circumstances?† and â€Å"Should the laws be changed to grant a universal right to voluntary euthanasia?†. In this essay, I am going to give reasons using ethical theories to justify these questions. Euthanasia Euthanasia is the act of a physician or other third party ending a patients life in response to severe pain and suffering. Euthanasia can be classified into three types. They are voluntary euthanasia, non-voluntary euthanasia and involuntary euthanasia. Involuntary euthanasia is the action that takes the patient’s life without any informed consent of the patient but the patient may want to live.†¦show more content†¦It is a voluntary euthanasia. Utilitarianism tells us that whether an action is right or wrong depends on its consequences and the right thing to do is to promote the happiness of most people. If he has the right to die, it can eliminate the suffering of the person, decrease psychological burden of his family and decrease financial burden of his family and also the society. However, it will increase the suffering of his family. In this case, the amount of the happiness is more than the amount of the unhappiness. Therefore, this action is right in Act Util itarianism of Utilitarianism theory. However, in rule Utilitarianism, this action is wrong because of breaking the Hong Kong’s law. Kantian Ethics tells us the right action is to act from duty. We have moral duties to not kill and not allow to die wherever possible. Moreover, Kantian Ethics is concerned with the act itself but not the consequences. Kant’s theory said people should never be merely means to an end-in-itself. We should never kill someone in order to reduce suffering, or save money. Therefore, non-voluntary euthanasia and involuntary euthanasia are not allowed in this theory. Using the above example, when we has persistent vegetative state that want to die because we have no will in our live, we also want someone intend that others follow our will. So, vetoing a person’s will cannot from a universal law because there is a contradiction.Show MoreRelatedDo You Think That the Right to Life Entails a Right to Die Under Certain Circumstances? Reliability of System The reliability of the system is defined as the probability of success involved within any outcomes from any system. In contrast with these facts, the challenges associated with the manual system needs to be first analyzed in order to find solution for that perspective. Establishment of interoperability and product differentiation opportunities for platform teams are dependent on the cost structure involved within the system development. In addition to this, not only the development of application involved within the cost structure but also the up-gradation and product life cycle is dependent on this (Agero.com 2017). Now these factors are not synced with each vehicles i.e. this is not same for all vehicles. Therefore, Hirschenberger has suggested that the new cloud service AgeroView provides every facility that the manual operations cannot provide the driver in order to substantiate their demands and updating the application with respect to demands. Therefore, the application is com pletely reliable for usages over automotive vehicle operations (Agero.com 2017). Quality of System The main challenge associated with contemporary system provides lack of interoperability of system architecture among different kinds of vehicles. According to Hirschenberger, they are providing one interface for human and car applications that provides effective user interface changes, vehicle line updates regardless of the vehicle electronics (Agero.com 2017). The HMI can be utilized over the vehicles in order to make it more dynamic with respect to various situations. Therefore, from the perspective of quality of system AgeroView is providing good quality of service. Conclusion This can be concluded that the system effectiveness is the combination of system availability, Reliability and Quality. These important aspects involved within the system effectiveness is described with respect to AgeroView, one private cloud provided by Ageor the network provider for independent roadside services. It is important therefore that strategic plans are made known to stakeholders and approved where appropriate. Additionally, there should be a monitoring system to ascertain the progress of the strategy t o determine if it is in line with achievement of strategic goals. Finally, stakeholders should be made aware of all relevant information to be had from the corporation. There should be no embellishment of the truth. In concluding, good strategic management is important to corporations because it allows managers to choose a strategic position, put a strategy into action and make strategic choices. It therefore will determine higher organizational performance especially when strategic goals are achieved. It will also require managers to examine and adapt to business environmental changes so as to maintain a competitive edge. Romanticism And Realism Essays - Art History, Nude Art, Free Essays

Romanticism And Realism Essays - Art History, Nude Art, Free Essays Romanticism and Realism At the end of the Baroque Period in the eighteenth and nineteenth century art was divided into two distinct categories, Romanticism and Realism. Romanticism, the passion-filled works illustrating stimulating accounts of specific events with symbolic gestures emerging from the scene, separated itself from the more politically correct stance taken by Realists. A fine example of Romanticism is G?ricault?s Raft of the Medusa. The brutal scene, set afloat on the wild seas, is emphasized by the chiaroscuro modeling of the lump of figures in the center of the raft. The X form of the composition draws your eye all around the composition. The eye starts at the top right with the Revolutionary figure holding on to a piece of cloth in the colors of the French Revolution and then is drawn down the diagonal. G?ricault then depicts the striving, the dying, and the dead as they overlap each other in a fierce struggle to survive. The eye is then drawn up and down the dark opposing diagonal. This whole scene is then placed on the mighty ocean to delineate the fact that the raft is a metaphor for France being on a hostile ocean of depravity. The Grande Odalisque also typifies Romanticism. Ingres, using example such as the Mannerist Parmaganino?s Madonna with a long neck, takes the artistic license to elongate the figure of this Turkish harem girl. Influenced by the neo-classical revival Ingres draws upon the Greek technique of flat linear forms and depicts his model in an impossible position allow us the view of both her shoulders and her breast; the figure is given an extra three vertebrae in order to maintain this position. Ingres endows a feeling of sensuality into the figure instead of the paint. The chromatic effect of the composition pulls the harem girl to the front as she is the only warm color in the piece. Ingres also gives her a very exotic feel with her accessories: the peacock fan, velvet drapes, and other exorbitant furniture. Ingres also uses Raphael?s typical female head and a gaze that says, ?You have just interrupted me,? but you don?t know what you interrupted further intriguing the voyeur. In contrast to the almost mystical passion and intrigue of Grande Odalisque is Rue Transnonain. This lithograph by Daumier is realism in the truest sense. Daumier depict the social injustice of the innocent killing of all the workers in a housing block. Daumier draws in the viewer with the initial scene of a man in his pajamas lying dead against his bed. The viewer is then drawn to pay closer attention to the work. In careful examination of the piece the viewer sees a baby crushed under the man with just its head and arms coming out from under the weight of this man. There is a pool of blood forming from the baby which intends to play on the viewers sympathy eliciting violent emotions of hatred towards the butcher who took the lives of these innocent people who were obviously sleeping as indicated by the attire and disarray of the bed. The awful scene depicted in Rue Transnonain. elicits emotions and a need for social reform. The Third Day of May, by Goya is an example of a transitional piece which reflects both Realism and Romanticism. In this piece Goya depicts a specific incident in which a number a civilians in Madrid were rounded up in killed in retaliation for the deaths of French soldiers a few days before. Painted during Goya?s ?Black Period? the tenebroso conflict of the light fighting away at the dark sky is extremely dramatic and the chromatic effect from this adds to the suspense and drama of the situation at hand. Goya also puts the victim of this murderous rampage in a white shirt to symbolize innocence, strongly drawing on the Romantic style. But Goya also uses the harsh reality of the dead body and the pool of blood accumulating on the ground to make a social commentary on the death of these men, drawing on the school of Realism. Courbet, considered by many the father of realism, also uses techniques of both schools. To illustrate, in Burials of Ornans, Courbet depicts a funeral scene with an intense feel

Improvement in Race Relations essays

Improvement in Race Relations essays Race relations in the United States are much better now than they were when Toni Morrison wrote A Slow Walk of Trees 25 years ago. The United States prides itself in being considered the most diverse country in the planet. Living in Los Angeles, California, one of the biggest metropolitan cities in our country, I have the opportunity of seeing different races every day. Our cultural melting pot of a country has evolved so much from the mid-1970s, that interracial marriages, minority executives, celebrities and athletes are all now commonplace in our society. It is also not unheard of to see many minorities living in prominent neighborhoods.. There are still many racial stereotypes in our country. Some people, many of which are Caucasian, are still alienated when seeing a group of young African-American or Latino males. African-American and Latino minorities are still being pulled over by police officers for no particular reason, other than looking suspicious. Racial stereotypes are a result of many instances. One major cause of racial stereotypes in the African-American community is rap music. Rap artists such as Kurupt, Snoop Doggy Dogg, Nas, DMX, Master P and the late Christopher Wallace (Notorious B.I.G) often use lyrics riddled with incidents such as the dealing and use of narcotics, promiscuity, robbery and homicide. The large exposure of rap music, currently the number one selling music genre in our country, gives many people the impression that the majority of black people live that same exact dangerous lifestyle often glamorized by irresponsible rap artists. However, there are rap artists such as Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Outkast, The Roots, and Common Sense that write lyrics about the lack of racial unity in our country, oppression, and the disagreement of the rap style of the rappers who project criminal personalities. ...

Letter of Advice Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words - 2

Letter of Advice - Essay Example It is important to note of the barriers that hinder effective communication and relationships. Most barriers in communication stem from self-protection. However, there are unavoidable circumstances, especially, if partners come from backgrounds that possess disparity (Wood, 2012). The intensity of the situation regards the level of disparity. The crucial thing for partners is that they realize these differences. In turn, they should be aware of how the same affects their communication. Individuals possess fears and insecurities that hinder one from wholly experiencing the benefits of a relationship. The light thing about these fears is that people learn about the same. This comes from the fact that partners may fear judgment from the same. Besides, they fear ridicule and appearing stupid in front of partners. This fear is coupled comes with the view that someone is sensitive of being overpowered. In this sense, fear impairs communication in notable ways. To begin with, a partner woul d not communicate true thoughts because one preempts what the other partner would like. This creates a situation where an individual stifles one’s emotions and thoughts. Another barrier of proper communication concerns with the case of insensitivity. It relates to inadequate care for a partner’s feelings. In addition, it entails inaccurate perception and portrayal of one’s feelings (Allen, 2002). It relates to detachment of an individual in the relationship until one becomes only preoccupied with oneself. It articulates as a case of personal insulation. Insensitivity expresses in notable ways. For instance, it comes as a method of diverting others’ concerns. In typical instances, one would turn a mutual conversation towards oneself. It deviates from the person who engages in talking. This occurs when a partner does not have proper listening skills. In certain instances, it comes as
